What Is This Charity?

For many students with autism, ADHD, and other learning differences, school is a site of constant ostracization and repeated failure. How can a person go out into the world when they feel like the world rejects them?

At Franklin Academy, students grades 8-PG live in an environment that simultaneously embraces who they are—from day one—and challenges them to think big: about themselves, about college, about jobs, and about their ability to change the world. For many, this is their first such positive experience in education: integrating social and self-advocacy skills into traditional curriculum.

Why OREE Values This Charity

OREE and the Coons family believe in the strength of a like-minded community to support the development of a healthy sense of self: the foundation of self-confidence, from which desire to achieve sprouts. The Coons family has seen this process at Franklin Academy first-hand: Their older son, William, is a Franklin Academy alum. He has recently graduated from Lesley University.

The Impact of This Charity

The Future of Franklin Academy & Installation of Alexander Morris-Wood as Head of School saw a passing of the torch at Franklin Academy, from founder Frederick Weissbach to its second-ever headmaster, Alexander Morris-Wood. Alexander Morris-Wood is returning to Franklin Academy after working at Beacon College, the first-ever accredited college in the United States for students with learning disabilities.
